ALRIGHT! Anybody up for another 100 frame animation contest? A few workshop people have asked about it, so I wanted to ask everybody on the intertubes about it as well. It would be cool to get at least 10 people who are committed to doing it.

We could start in a week, so leave a comment and mention a theme you'd like to use. Use the contest tag for prior examples and inspiration.

As a reminder:

- the shot has to be 100 frames long (not shorter, not longer)
- you can use sound if you want to
- you have one week to finish it
- winner gets a $50 Amazon prize (make sure that Amazon ships to where you live - otherwise I can't send you want you want!)

First official Spungella Animation Contest

Contest is over, thanks a lot for participating!
You can vote for your favorite clip here: spungellacontest.blogspot.com
___________________________

Alright! Here we go! The topic is:

GUILTY
__________________________________

Welcome to the first official Spungella Animation Contest!

Why a contest? Let me backtrack and explain a bit:

When I started with the first blog I also added those pesky Google Adsense advertisements. I was intrigued by the financial potential and if you have a big site with a lot of good content updates, it can be very lucrative. Animation is pretty specialized, it's not like I have a site about house mortgages, religion or something similar which attracts a lot of interest, so the money I make is minimal. But still, it can average out to $30 a month. Pocket change you might say, but to me, that's my monthly web and domain hosting bill. Sometimes I make more, sometimes less, but it's all coming from visitors clicking on those ads. So after all that time, I wanted to reward the people who click on those. Not that I know who does, but at least I wanted to take some of that "free" money and do something useful and fun with it. And why not use it to fund a prize for an animation contest and give back that way?

So here we are. Hopefully the first of many contests to come (in whatever shape or form). I talked already about it (see here), but let's explain and outline all the aspects of this contest:

  • Challenge: create a shot or sequence based on a specific topic using only 100 frames within one week
  • Medium: whatever you want
  • The topic will be announced this Sunday, April 25th, at midnight. So technically Monday super early morning on the 26th. :)
  • Hand in your work on Monday, May 3rd. Send me the movie file either as an attachment or via a link so I can download it.

You can check out examples of this kind of exercise here and here.

I will not be providing any type of feedback within that time frame. You will have to go from shot idea to final polished end result on your own within a week (peer feedback is fine of course).

Please use a commonly used codec. A quicktime file with an h.264 compression for instance would be great. Render the animation big enough, around 800x600 (widescreen format is fine too of course). Please don't send something like 40x30 or 4000x3000.
If you work in 3D, any rig is fine. You can find free online rigs at Animation Buffet.
You can add sound if you want to as well.

You can do pretty much whatever you want to. Just keep it to 100 frames, no more. Include a frame counter in your submission.
And stay on topic. So let's say the topic is "Nervous", don't have a guy being super relaxed reading a book. The interpretation of the topic can be pretty open though. So if it would be "Dying", then it doesn't have to be just about characters dying. A cell phone signal dying works too. If you have any questions about the topic, just email me.

Ok, what do you win??

  • First prize is an Art-of Book of your choice. I will buy it and ship it anywhere.

As pointed out in the comments already, I'm thinking of Art-of Books like the ones available on Amazon for instance, which hover around the $50 area. I'm open to other ones of course, but a $400 Pixar: 20 Years of Animation book is not exactly realistic. I was expecting common sense, hahaha! But I guess my wording really leaves it open to everything. So there, be realistic. Don't find some crazy rare book on ebay or whatnot. :)

Who decides that?

At first, I will put up all the entries and there will be a poll where everybody can vote for their favorite clip. We will narrow it down to the top 5. After that I will select the winning three entries.

That should be all. If you have any questions, leave a comment or email me and I will update this post.

Cheers and good luck!!
JD

100 frames exercises - Summer 08

click on image to play movie

I'm very late posting these, sorry about that!

A few semesters ago a student suggested that I should give them an exercise which had a 100 frame limit. That sounded like a good idea and the class ended up getting that exercise on week 14, due in a week for the last class. We came up with different topics and through elimination voting decided on the final one to animate to. The students decided on "Dying" and so they had one week to come up with an idea, block it out and polish it as much as possible without any feedback.

It was great to see the final results and the students went above and beyond with their assignments. No grey, default characters in an empty set! :)

Well done!

Reminder - compress your movies!

Hey guys,

when you send me a movie, please make sure to compress them in order to keep download time to a minimum. I get files that are 15MB, which I can compress to 250KB. That's quite a change.

This is from the class F.A.Q. *cough cough*:

- Once you did the playblast in Maya, open that .avi movie in quicktime. Then go to File>Export..., choose Movie to Quicktime Movie, then Options. Under Settings use H.264, Key Frames: Every 100 Frames, Quality around 65. OK all that and save the file.

I do uncompressed playblasts, then export using H.264. Small files, good quality.

Class F.A.Q.

As students send me questions I will post the answers here for the rest of the class. Make sure that you check this site daily, as class updates, critiques and lecture (extensions) are being posted here.

Homework - the moment you are done with your clip and you need feedback, post it on your site (or any site that offers hosting), which is the preferred method, or you can send me the clip via email. Make sure you keep the file size small.

Movie Files - they have to be Quicktime, with a frame counter visible (go to this site for frame counter information or download it directly here). To keep the file size small, use the H.264 compression codec as you export your .avi file to quicktime.

- Once you did the playblast in Maya, open that .avi movie in quicktime. Then go to File>Export..., choose Movie to Quicktime Movie, then Options. Under Settings use H.264, Key Frames: Every 100 Frames, Quality around 65. OK all that and save the file. Voilà.

Syllabus - you can choose the assignments outlined on the AAU syllabus or you can make your own syllabus. Think about what you want to do and what area needs improvement. Do you need more practice with cycles? Do that. More acting? Body mechanics? Look at the body of work you have right now. Ask yourself honestly, did I completely master the basics? The conventional order of exercises would be a bouncing ball, then a character walk, jump, weight lift, pantomime, monologue and dialogue. Since a lot of you are graduating in a semester or two, you might have done a few if not all those exercises already. But again, did you master them?
As you prepare your own syllabus, make sure that you don't take on too much. Give each exercise enough time. The main point though is that you have to go beyond the exercise. Your clip has to stand out not just animation technique wise, but also from an entertainment point of view, the presentation (by that I mean the staging, the composition of the shot, not a fancy render (which helps but is just the icing on the cake)), etc. You need to be creative and avoid the current cliches. How do I know what is cliche? Take a few hours and go through people's reels, sites like the 11secondclub, animation forums, etc. After having seen 200+ clips, you will know what is being overused.

Animation Clips - Focus on making your clip more than just an exercise, give it context. Don't just have a guy lifting a box. Who is that guy (or girl or thing), where is he and why is he lifting this box? Avoid the default model (grey Norman for instance), give it character.
When doing a walk cycle, please have at least a front and side view visible in ONE movie.
When doing a bouncing ball, please use "side" view camera, not perspective, unless it is for more elaborate shots where the composition is telling a story. If you are doing the basic "heavy, medium, light ball" exercise, please have all three balls in one movie. And again, a frame counter should be visible.

Your own Website - get a host as soon as you can. Your site doesn't need to be fancy, just clean and professional. Don't wait, you need an online portfolio ASAP.
Don't have movie files on it which are 100MB. Yes, broadband is nothing new, but still, try to keep the file size small.

Audio Files - before you start with a monologue/dialogue clip, send me or show me at least 5 different ones. Really try to get the audio off a DVD, so that the quality is high. It's okay to find something online, but once you decided on the right clip, get the sound from the DVD because web clips usually are of poor quality.
For full guidelines, read this post.

Maya Setup - set your animation scene to 24fps

Future classes - read this post
