Spring Teaching is done!!

Since I'm back at the AAU this Spring and doing workshops I'll lump both of them ending into one post, even though the last workshop session ends this Monday. Summer On-Site Workshops are still up in the air. I wasn't happy with the new place and I need to find something better before starting a new workshop. The Online Workshops are always open though, in case on-site animators want to continue that way.

It was a lot of fun coming back to the Academy and the poor class that had to endure my rants and insults were super patient and funny. ;)

Thanks guys for an awesome 15 weeks!

Fall 2012 SOS Workshop is DONE!

It's the end!! Luckily not the end of the world, but the Fall 2012 Workshop has come to an end!!

The list of classic and hilarious workshop sessions keeps growing and the animators attending never cease to amaze me. Good luck to all of you (and for some of you, see you in Spring!).

As always, thank you!! And happy Holidays!!

On-Site Workshop location change and open sign-ups

There is a location change happening for the On-Site Workshops. It's now:

1 Market St (in the Steuart Tower)

It's still very close to the Academy of Art (since most of the animators attending are AAU students, it was important to me to minimize travel time for them).

I'm signing up with Opinno and they offer great conference rooms and one very big event space, where the majority of the sessions will be held. Seating arrangement can be reshuffled to make it super comfy!!

This all means that
sign-ups for the Spring 2013 Workshop sessions
are open!!

So if you want to join, let me know! Email me using signup(at)spungella.com. And if you have any questions about the workshop, hop over to spungellaonsite.blogspot.com for more information!

Sign-up for On-Site Animation Workshops is open! Adding Video Review to Online Workshops!

If you're interested in attending the On-Site (San Francisco) Animation Workshops, head over to www.spungellaonsite.blogspot.com to find out more about it!

------------

The Online Animation Workshops are in full swing since I opened the sign-up windows to individual needs. It's pretty much full but each month  (especially in October) animators are ending their run so sign up to secure a spot!

What I'm adding to the Online Workshop is video reviews. I've been testing them for a few weeks now and so far the feedback has been very positive. So from now on review sessions will be a combination of email/screenshot and video feedback, depending on the complexity of the review content and of course the preference of the animator.

For more information about the Online Workshop, head over to www.spungellaonline.blogspot.com

Spungella Animation Workshop people are awesome.

In yesterday's session we witnessed the most unintentionally disturbing animation clip ever in the history of any classes or workshops I've ever held. Fernando, I'm proud of you, an idle cycle will never be the same without you. We went from "pulling a Romit" to "pulling a Fernando". Wow. Just wow.

It never ceases to amaze me how much fun those workshops are and it's all thanks to the people participating.

Thanks guys! :)

Fall 2011 Spungella Animation Workshops are done!

If I had to describe the feeling of this Fall's workshop (as well as AM's Creature Class), then it would have to be like this:

Thanks to everybody who participated, it was again a TON of fun and very inspiring to see what you guys come up with! We even had a leprechaun in a suitcase for crying out loud!!! :)

Have a great holiday break! You all deserve it!

Body movement in support of personality

Each animator will get to a point where they will have mastered the body mechanics enough so that they can focus on acting choices. But temptation is always there to have gestures or other body movements showcasing animation principles instead of personality. I totally understand and I'm guilty of that myself. A frequent example in my workshops is my Maya 3 assignment from the Academy, Ze Chair:

which was lovingly referred to as "Animation Jerk Off" by the awesome teacher Lisa Mullins. She immediately let me know that this is just animation for animation's sake. And she was totally right. I was more in love with the animation principles and focused on showing them off, instead of thinking about character and personality. I hope she's still teaching. Her class was the first real character animation class for me and one of the best ones.

So once you get passed that, it's less about "there's a pop on x17" but more about acting choices, which fall more into the "I prefer this over that." as opposed to being wrong (of course you can have totally inappropriate acting choices that will feel wrong, but I hope you get my point).

Which brings me to a workshop clip I was giving feedback for. The question from the animator was, which version I preferred. My response and preference was based on movement supporting a character's personality, which I'm sure is totally debatable, but I just wanted post the feedback from the Workshop Feedback page here as well:
------------------------------------------------------------------------

stuck02

IP10

(This is in response to which version I prefer.)

Funny enough, I like them both, but specific parts and would mix them. I know that sounds complicated and not sure if that's helping you. What I like about "stuck02" is the amount of rotation and overlap the body has after she's being stuck. In "stuck02" she goes pretty far down up to x54, whereas in "IP10" she doesn't go as far and stops a bit abruptly. So anim wise from a body mechanics point of view, "stuck02" feels better.

But what I prefer in "IP10" is her left arm from x51 to 74, because it's stiffer. She's surprised, a bit irritated, but tense, and that is reflected in that stiffer arm. In "stuck02", from x54 to 85, the arm is loose and dangling, and feels too out of control and animated. Too me it's not in character.
After that it's up to you. Neither versions are wrong, they are just different in terms of acting choices. In "stuck02" she looks back up to x100 in a slow way, which gives her a feel of "Hello? Uhm... anybody see that? Help me!". In "IP10" she goes up very fast to x93, which gives it a feel of "Oops! I hope no one saw that!", which is a bit more in character because she looks and moves like a confident business woman, so when she's in trouble, I think she would want to keep that strong and confident look, so she wouldn't look around for help, she would try to fix it herself. That strong personality is reflected in x182, how she puts her glasses back into the right place. Then at the end when the manhole cover comes out, that's what breaks her confidence and that's why she looks surprised and out of it at x240. It's good contrast and a change in her character, whereas in "stuck02", she already looks a bit helpless like that during the x91 area. So the ending in "stuck02" is a bit more of the same in terms of character and less of a contrast.

So basically, I would use "stuck02" until x56, then use the rest of "IP10". :)

8 Sessions available for Summer Workshops!

Hey all,

there have been a lot of requests for 8 sessions in Summer (once a week) instead of 16 (twice a week).

So from now on you have the option to do once or twice a week, both for online and on-site workshops.

As a reminder for the online workshops, each session guarantees a designated feedback day. Any additional feedback requests outside of the designated days can not always get addressed immediately due to time constraints (like the on-site workshops, job, etc.). So if you're super busy and need a lot of feedback, 16 sessions are still an option.

And of course, half the sessions means half the price! :)

8 sessions (8 weeks) on-site: $400
8 sessions (8 weeks) online: $250

Cheers
JD

Summer SOS and SO Animation Workshops sign-up

Not that there is a specific time for sign-ups (you can always email me for future workshops), but I just wanted to "officially" remind everybody who's interested that you can sign up for the Summer Workshops by emailing me using signup (at) spungella.com

You can join the on-site Workshops here in San Francisco. Check out the FAQ about it here. The first session starts June 16th.

You can also join the online Workshop and there's an FAQ about it here.
The first week starts June 13th.

The online one is filling up but the on-site one has plenty of space left. As always, if you have any questions, check out the FAQ or email me.
The Summer Workshops are busier than the Spring/Falls ones, with two sessions a week for an 8 week total (instead of the usual 16 weeks) for those who need a lot of work done. If you can only manage one session a week, let me know in the email.

You can see the schedule and how many spots are available here for online and here for on-site workshops.

Cheers

Workshop update and testimonial

This is the last week until the Online and On-site Workshops start and it's pretty hectic in terms of shuffling things around. Here is the current status:

Spring 2011 [updated 2/03/11]

The Monday #1 On-site Workshop is full.

The Thursday #2 On-site Workshop is full.

The Online Workshop has 3 spots left (current count 11).

Summer 2011 and Fall 2011

Sign-ups are starting and I have already received emails for the Summer On-site and Online Workshop, plus even a Fall 11 request. So email me if you're interested in the Summer/Fall spots.

-----------

And speaking of workshops, I always recommend that you guys leave feedback so that I can tweak the workshops to fit your needs. Here are links to the SOS and SO feedback page.

I actually got one recent testimonial which made me really happy (thanks Eric!!!) and I hope that I can continue to make it worthwhile for you guys:

Having JD as a teacher at the Academy I already knew what he was capable of, and what jedi powers he can teach me. The workshops surpassed the classes, IMO. Not only do we get 100% honest comments and critique about our work, but we also get insight on the industry of animation. Everything from making demo reels to handling clients and proving yourself as a worthy employee was covered (as long as you ask, JD is more than happy to answer your questions). Thats one of the things that separates JD's workshops from everyone elses. He gives everyday tips and knowledge about life in general and how it relates to animation. I highly recommend JD's workshops for anyone, whether you're just a beginner or a seasoned pro. Also, bring Twix.
